An Exercise in Visualization

When we think of meditation, we think of clearing the mind. However, as we get into more advanced meditations, we typically incorporate visualization. Visualization may come easily to some, but for others, it is a struggle. In visualizing an apple, we close our eyes and picture an apple. However, to be even more effective, visualization should include all our senses.

In visualizing alone, we incorporate our sight. Is the apple red or green? Is it big or small? Does it look ripe?

When we picture an apple, perhaps we can also imagine that we pluck it from an apple tree. In doing so, we feel the apple in our hand. We feel the force that is necessary to pull the apple off of the branch. Perhaps we need to use both hands to do this. One hand holds the branch while the other plucks the apple. We feel the apple’s weight and shape. We feel the texture. In doing so, we have included the sense of touch.

Next, imagine that you take a bite of this apple. What does it taste like? Is it very sweet or is it a little sour? Does your mouth water when you imagine biting into the apple?

We can also imagine the smell of an apple. Once we have bitten into it, can we smell it? Perhaps it might help to imagine a freshly baked apple pie. What does this smell like?

We can also incorporate sound. What sound would we hear if an apple fell out of a tree? What does it sound like when we bite into a crispy apple? What does it sound like when we pluck the apple from the tree? Can you imagine the sound of the leaves rustling?

As you read through these descriptions, were you able to imagine seeing, touching, tasting smelling and hearing? Are you able to close your eyes and have the same experience?

For some, this exercise will be easy, but for others, it will be a struggle.

It may help to practice visualizations by imagining a loved one. Take a moment to close your eyes, and imagine someone you love dearly. Can you see their face? Can you hear their voice? Can you imagine their scent? Can you imagine holding their hand? Imagine this person offering you some food. Can you taste the food? Let’s go a step further. Can you sense the love that you feel for this person, and the love they feel for you?

Why would we even want to be able to use all our senses in our visualizations? Much has been documented about the benefits of visualization. Some use it for healing. There are cases where people have been miraculously cured of terminal illnesses by using visualization techniques in which they imagine that they healthy. Of course, Ancient Wisdom tells us that, because of karma, this technique may not always work.

Some athletes use visualization techniques to prepare for their sporting events. Some of the most successful athletes will of course endure much physical training, but they will also use visualization exercises.

Truly, people use these techniques for a multitude of reasons. Some people find that these visualizations help them to get a job. Others use them to find good parking spaces. Some may want to have more harmonious relationships. The members of Heart, Head and Hand use visualization techniques for the free healing service that we offer.

Are there any dangers in visualization? If we may offer a word of caution, it would relate to visualizations that may include other beings. In anything we do, we should always be respectful of free will. For this reason, the Heart, Head and Hand members require consent for our healing service.
